Ruby Dance

Dance Fusion Composition

Composition Background

For this composition I wanted to concentrate on some of the rhythmic elements of Arabic music and to fuse that with a danceable tune influenced by "Ebaqa qabelni (Stay and Meet Me)" by Ruby.

Composition Structure

The structure of this composition is as follows :-

  • Verse
  • Chorus
  • Percussion Interlude
  • Verse
  • Chorus
  • Bridge
  • Double Chorus

Composition Development

For the rhythmic elements of this track I used the following :-

  • Lo-fi Ez drummer track with varying rhythms for verse and chorus.
  • Two different Arabic percussion loops for verse and chorus.
  • Live Dumbek and Tambourine.
  • Electronic Kick drum to add presence and depth.
I added a bass guitar track and a chord track which is 3 tracks of instruments introduced at various times during the song and and consists of a Mellotron, Arabic strings and a mallet.

The melody for both verse and chorus is played on the Saz Baglama. I also added a Wasp synth melody line that is introduced from verse 2 onwards.

The Halion Spectral synth is used on the intro with a percussion fade-in.

The Bridge consists of a Ney solo accompanied by Arabic strings and a synth arpeggio.

Reflection

Based on my research material for this particular composition, I wanted to achieve a more traditional Arabic dance music track but with a more "Western" element in using electronic instruments.

It was also good to record live percussion instruments, Dumbek and Tambouine which added more of a live feel to the recording.
