An Inspirational Gig

Around 2000, I got the chance to see Natacha Atlas at the Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea. She was playing a few warmup dates before a nationwide tour. The most incredible thing about the gig is that she was accompanied by a 12-piece Egyptian orchestra. The first time that I had ever seen anything like this.

An Inspirational Album

"Gedida" was an album by Natacha Atlas that I discovered around 1999 and became a firm favorite of mine. She combines original compositions using Arabic instruments with some traditional cover versions such as La Vie En Rose, originally recorded by Edith Piaf.

Another band that I discovered during this period was “Orange Blossom” who are a French band routed in the tradition of Arabic music but fuse it with other genres.

While I was discussing Arabic music fusions with a friend, he referred me to this composition by Ruby. I've included two versions here. One is the original recording and the second one is a re-mix to make the song more appealing to a dance orientated market. The first version here is the remix

This is one Arabic instrument that I will not be attempting to learn - The Ney Anban.
