The Ney
The Ney
The Ney is a Turkish / Arabic wind-based instrument that produces a sound similar to a flute. There are subtle differences between the Turkish and Arabic Ney, mainly down to the positioning of the holes that determine the quarter tone that is produced. If we consider that a true quarter tone would be positioned 50% between the lower and upper half tones, the Turkish “quarter” tone is slightly sharper than a pure quarter tone (maybe 55%) and the Arabic quarter tone is slightly flatter than a pure quarter tone (maybe 45%)
Ney Lessons
Reflections
On reflection, I probable found the Ney the most difficult of the instruments that I had chosen to learn to play.
The blowing technique and the circular breathing technique where you constantly breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth require a great deal of practice.
However, I did achieve results that meant I was able to incorporate live Ney playing into my compositions which was the original objective.
